<title>Report Says China Will Demand Source Code</title>
<description>An anonymous reader alerts us to a two-week-old story that hasn't gotten much traction in the press to date. A Japanese newspaper and the AP report that China plans to demand source code from hardware manufacturers, and ban the sale of products from companies that don't comply. China is calling this an &quot;obligatory accreditation system for IT security products.&quot; The plan is to go into effect next May, according to sources. &quot;Products expected to be subject to the system are those equipped with secret coding, such as [a] contactless smart card system developed by Sony Corp., digital copiers, and computer servers. The Chinese government said it needs the source code to prevent computer viruses taking advantage of software vulnerabilities and to shut out hackers. However, this explanation is unlikely to satisfy concerns that disclosed information might be handed from the Chinese government to Chinese companies. There also are fears that Chinese intelligence services could exploit such confidential information by making it easier to break codes used in... digital devices.&quot;Read more of this story at Slashdot.

<title>Air Traffic Controller Trainees almost kill 60 43+</title>
<description>Two trainee controllers, on duty by themselves, at Lehigh International Airport cleared a a Mesa Airlines CRJ700 to take off while a Cessna 172 was still taxiing on the runway. The regional jet missed the Cessna by 10 feet. The NTSB says the CRJ had 60 passengers aboard. The airline says there were 43 souls on-board. The CRJ had hit 120 knots on its take off roll when it spotted the Cessna ahead and aborted takeoff. It was a &quot;save&quot; by the CRJ crew who had been set up to die by the trainee controllers.According to the Controller Union, it is symptomatic of what ails our ATC system today. The union president said:&quot; The FAA is so desperate to staff its towers they are forced to work trainees by themselves without adequate numbers of experienced controllers there to work with them. This has exposed the inexperience of our new workforce. It's unfair to these trainees and should be unacceptable to the flying public.&quot;Until we see the burning Jet-A and bodies strewn on an airport somewhere ... it will just be another day for the FAA, an agency that takes no actual responsibility for the dangerous environment it has helped create. Never has there been a part of the transportation sector begging for privatization more than this one.

    <title>Flickr Find: The Cocoon</title>
<description>Filed under: Rig of the Week, Flickr Find
Mitch Haile shared this set with our Flickr Pool to show us the ridiculously awesome setup he has in his office.
From what we can tell, he has:

    a 24-inch Intel iMac
    a 15-inch MacBook Pro
a Mac Pro with six (!) monitors
    several PCs
a couple of Kinesis Freestyle keyboards

The six monitors include four HPs, one ViewSonic, and a 30-inch Apple Cinema Display. The Mac Pro has three video cards. The whole shebang is served by two APC uninterruptible power supplies. Nice.
Me, I just want a reason to keep an ice bucket on my desk.
Thanks, Mitch!Read&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Permalink&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Email this&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Comments

<title>App disqualified from App Store because it 'duplicates iTunes functionality'</title>
<description>Filed under: Developer, App StoreAn iPhone developer who created an app that manages and plays podcasts says the app was disqualified from the App Store because &quot;it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes.&quot; That's right, iTunes for the desktop.
This opens up unsettling possibilities for other developers. There are many applications that duplicate the functionality of Apple software for both the desktop and mobile devices. For instance, there are many calculators that duplicate the functionality of Calculator. Twitterrific has a small browser built in, duplicating the functionality of Safari. NetNewsWire duplicates some RSS reading functionality in Mail for Mac OS X.
There's a well-defined slippery slope here. While Apple is within its rights to accept or reject any app into the App Store for whatever reasons it sees fit, its communication with the developer community leaves a lot to be desired. (We talked a little about this on last Sunday's Talkcast.) Even though the developer says he followed all the rules, there's still a chance that an app will simply fall ill of Apple's fickle fancy.
Will this latest move by Apple chill relations with developers? Or are the upsides still too great to ignore? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.
Thanks, Mike!Read&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Permalink&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Email this&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Comments
